| SYMBOLISM AND MONUMENTS |
|
Next to air, food and water, symbolism is one of the most important things to influence our human existence. Without symbolism, we would have not been able to raise ourselves above other species, because, symbolism is required for abstract thought. Academia is finally saying that Neanderthal was an entirely different species and we were living along side of them and were able to outlast or overcome them because we were capable of abstract thought.
Imagine, a few thousand years ago when we were living as clans in caves and having to hunt every day for food, water and skins for clothing. Suppose our language was composed of only grunts and gestures. After a period of time, this grunt or that gesture became a symbol for some thing or some action and when we thought of or saw that gesture or that symbol we knew it substituted or represented that thing or that particular action. This was the beginning of our ability for abstract thought.
Suppose Ogg and Ugh and Ugh Ugh, along with several other unnamed members of the clan were enjoying a successful day of hunting and food gathering and were skinning out the saber toothed yakimstretcher to have meat with the wild roots, mushrooms and plants that the women had gathered . To great dismay, a short time later, Ogg was having severe stomach pains and frothing at the mouth from having eaten some plant or mushroom that was very poisonous. Writhing and pitching around on the ground were symbols that something was amiss. Finally, after some time, Ogg died. There was great wailing and noise made by the clan, which were symbols for their grievance.
After a few days the grieving subsided, Ogg was still laying around and getting ripe, so they decided to use some sticks to scratch out a hole in the ground and put Ogg in it and covered him with dirt. They put a big rock on top of the dirt to keep the animals from digging him up.
From then on, every time a member of the clan passed by this large rock they would point at it and say Ogg . This rock became a symbol for Ogg, or maybe it was the first MONUMENT.
